The first technical file dedicated to FTTH – PON networks has just been published in english (freely accessible to all)
The evolution towards symmetrical 10 Gbit/s PON networks XGS-PON: what impacts on current infrastructures?
It is under this title that the CREDO Circle presents this month the results of its study work, carried out with several members, as well as its recommendations in the field of FTTH PON networks.
The successful implementation of the France Very High Speed Plan launched in 2013 has enabled the rapid development of “Very High Speed” services based on PON technology (GPON, E-PON).
Since then, multimedia applications, UHD video, 5G mobile networks and professional uses have led to an increase in user bandwidth requirements, which is leading operators to increase the bandwidth of all network segments.
In addition, the planned closure of the local copper loop in 2030 will lead to a very significant increase in the number of users who will need to be connected to fiber (> 50%), which risks generating bandwidth reductions in many cases.
The transition from GPON to XGS-PON helps meet these new challenges.
This FTTH – PON technical file enriches the « Network sustainability » collection published by the Cercle CREDO. After a reminder of PON technology, it deals, on the one hand, with the technological evolution of GPON networks towards higher speed networks such as XGS-PON which offers a speed of 10 Gbit/s; on the other hand, the adaptations of networks to these new speeds as well as the impacts and challenges to be met to guarantee their quality, performance and sustainability. The technical file is enriched with numerous diagrams, tables and references as well as a glossary.
The work and recommendations of the CREDO Circle are reflected in a set of fact sheets, files and technical guides accessible online..
